Now a days it is common for a product to test on animals and that is why I think it is even better to support the companies that make an effort to protect animals and not bring harm to them in any way. Lush is a store that makes fresh handmade cosmetics without testing on animals and believes in making effective products from fresh organic fruits and vegetables, finest essential oils, and safe synthetics. They are against animal testing and to ensure that their products are not used towards animals in harmful ways they buy their ingredients from companies that do not conduct or commission tests on animals. They also use vegetarian ingredients and make their products fresh by using little or no preservative packaging.
Lush’s back story is very big and the company has worked very hard to get where they are today. The idea of lush all started when Mark Constantine a trained trichologist met Liz Weir a beauty therapist. They worked together and a few years later decided to start their own business selling natural hair and body products. In the early 80’s Mark had read about Anita Roddick who started The Body Shop and eventually became the company's biggest supplier for over a decade until The Body Shop bought their product formulas. Mark and Liz were not allowed to open a retail shop for five years due to The Body Shop’s purchase of the formulas, in result they created a mail order cosmetic company called Cosmetic-To-Go which was eventually sold. In 1995 they didn't have very much money left and spent what they had left to buy fresh fruits and vegetables from the market and then handmade products upstairs which they sold in a little shop downstairs in Poole. Competition from other stores urged them to name their new company when a customer suggested the name lush which is defined as being fresh, green, verdant, and drunken women. In 1996 lush was noticed and was wanted in North America and they had their first international launch in Vancouver. In 2003 their first store opened in San Francisco, and now there are over 210 shops in North America which are supplied by two cosmetic kitchens which are located in Canada. Later in 2007 as their company had grown they launched a charity pot by selling hand and body lotion which donated a hundred percent of the purchases to the fund. The money they raised was given to environmental, humanitarian, and animal rights charities. The charity pot was very successful and in the first five years they donated two million dollars through the program. In the next year the company made some environmental changes and tried to make majority of their products solid to use less packaging. As well did they make a switch to a hundred percent PCR bottles. Not only are they working towards being more environmentally friendly but they presented an annual lush award in 2012 which rewards individuals working in field of cruelty free scientific research.
Lush has a few main principles, to fight animal testing, use fresh ingredients, ethical buying, green washing, reducing waste, sustaining source, transportation, energy, water, and green stats. Lush believes in animal rights and has been against testing for over thirty years and their goal is to inform, encourage, and participate in the fight for animal rights. Using fresh ingredients started when inventors started buying ingredients from farmers markets and flower shops, and then infusing them into their newest inventions. Ethical buying is very important to lush because they want to know where their ingredients come from and how they are made. To ensure that the ingredients that they are buying is environmentally friendly and that the workers are in fair conditions lush buyers often travel to their suppliers to trace the ingredients and to meet with the producers and growers. Lush also buys from small scale producers to create positive change and relationships with people from different parts of the world. Not only does this company believe in animal testing but they believe in protecting people and animals in all aspects of the environment. To ensure they are an environmentally friendly company they try to use as little packaging as possible to reduce the carbon footprint. To help with transportation and energy lush supplies local markets with their products and powers their factories with renewable energy from wind and low-impact hydro in the grid.
Lush helps better the world in many ways and continues to fight against animal testing and raise money for many charities. More companies should be run like lush which would make a huge impact on the world for the better and should continue to promote environmentally friendly products. They should as well make people more aware of the impacts animal testing and reducing our waste and carbon footprint would have on the world.
